Ledger, 1840-1863; (bulk, 1840-1846).

Majority of volume lists accounts, 1840-1846, for bales of cotton purchased from various farmers, and cash accounts, 1863, listing sales at unidentified general store in Columbia, S.C. Cash book, ca. Jan.-Aug. 1863, includes values for bookcases, chairs, and other furniture, expenses for repair of shoes, purchases of food, etc.; 3 brief essays, each beginning with address "Sir," apparently written in reaction to death of Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson: "Sir, as to a military commander General Jackson assuredly deserves to be ranked with the most eminent in decision of character, in resoluteness and perseverance in action, in ardor of spirit, and force of volition he has probably few superior, " possibly intended as letters to the editor. Final pages of book filled with repititions of various mottos and epigrams on each line, as if written as a child's punishment.
